Childbirth
More and more mothers to be are turning to alternative methods of pain control during delivery.
Hypnotic childbirth is one of the most natural and pain free methods of giving birth.
Why do we need pain control?
It is interesting to look at why pain control is required in childbirth at all. In a normal childbirth the baby travels down the birth canal. If the birth canal is loose and relaxed then each contraction pushes the baby gently down and if the mother is fully dilated the baby comes out with a minimum of effort. The whole birth process happens very fast and the feelings of the mother range from mild discomfort to a very enjoyable experience. Because the mother is so relaxed breastfeeding if the mother chooses to breast feed will also be easier.
Why does giving birth cause pain?
However if the birth canal is tight and constricted, each contraction stretches or tears it and the baby is forced through this tight muscle which can cause enormous pain. Forceps may be required to deliver the baby. If the mother is not fully dilated then an episiotomy may be needed, requiring painful stitches. Thelaborand recovery time can be significant.
So what caused the birth canal to be tight and constricted? The number one reason is fear. Throughout a girls life virtually everything she has heard or seen about childbirth has been negative. The thought of childbirth fills most mothers to be with dread. When the contractions start and her whole body is tense and tight and the baby pushes against the birth canal the mother feels some pain. This pain increases her fear and she tenses up even more. When the next contraction comes she is even tighter and more pain is caused. It becomes a vicious circle leading to a most uncomfortable and long childbirth. Generally the more scared the mother is the worse the pain is.
How does hypnosis help?
Hypnotic childbirth operates in three ways. Firstly, using hypnosis the fear is removed and the mother looks forward to the birth of her child. Secondly, the mother is taught deep relaxation techniques which allow the baby to move gently down the birth canal with each contraction. Thirdly, hypnotic anesthesia it taught which allows the mother to numb any part of here body which she feels discomfort. Open heart surgery and amputations have been carried out with hypnotic anesthesia with no discomfort to the patients. Once the mother is trained in these methods which take about four, 1 hour sessions she can do this easily.
The real benefits of hypnotic childbirth is the mother is wide awake enjoying the whole process with a minimum recovery time. The child enters this world in a very gentle, natural and loving way.
What if hypnotic pain-control did not work?
Hypnotic childbirth is very successful but is should be noted that it does not exclude other methods of pain relief such as the gas or medical anesthesia. In the un-lightly event that the hypnotic conditioning does not work or there are complications in the birth all of the standard medical interventions are still available to the mother and child.
